Managing Technology

Recently there have been headlines about GM’s Factory Zero in Hamtramck, Michigan. These headlines tell of a 1000 people being laid off while the company adds “cobots.” This is a very concerning situation, but the layoffs at Factory Zero are largely due to customer demand, as EV sales are slowing. Factor Zero is going down to one shift to handle these shifts in volumes. I am happy to report that 500 of those being laid off have been given transfer rights to local facilities.

Managing technology is always a concern with any industry. Technological advancements have improved work life for our members through ergonomic guns for assembly, lifts for things like tires and panels and robots in paint shops that remove our members from the fumes associated with those types of production. As a union, we have to focus on making sure technology works for our members and not against them.

To combat the growing threat of Artificial Intelligence, we need contractual language AND legislation that backs workers in this transition. Unfortunately, that hasn’t happened. Not only has the current Congress refused to address the issue of regulating Artificial Intelligence, there was an attempt in the Senate to BAN states from passing their own regulations on AI. Fortunately, that bill was soundly defeated.

Heading into our next round of bargaining in 2028, we MUST address the threat to workers by Artificial Intelligence. Technology has always impacted manufacturing and will continue to do so. It will require both contractual language and government regulations to protect workers. As you head to the polls this fall, look at where candidates stand on safeguarding workers from technology intended to replace them. With regulations in place, it will help the UAW bargain contracts that will safeguard our members from the threat of technology that works against them rather than assist them.

In solidarity,

Mike
