On Friday, July 24, 2026, I had the privilege to be on hand for the announcement of a $157,000,000 investment in General Motors Wentzville, Missouri operations. Our members at UAW Local 2250 build the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon midsize trucks alongside the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana full-size vans.

Accountability
Those in leadership owe a debt to those we serve- the membership. You place your trust in leaders through your vote and in return we have to earn and retain that trust. This includes bargaining contracts, being a good steward of your dues monies and presenting a positive image of the UAW to the outside.

There are a lot of misconceptions around bargaining. No one person does it, bargaining requires a team. Each department elects a top committee to conduct negotiations. Every contract year, local unions submit demands for bargaining. Those demands are assembled and the top committee draft a strategy that is used at the table.

Securing the Future
During the 2023 national contract talks, we were successful in securing commitment for new product allocation for many of our locations. The addition of the Blazer at Spring Hill, Equinox at Fairfax, new truck production for Lake Orion and product commitment at Lansing Grand River, all represent new life for our locations.

Managing Technology
Recently there have been headlines about GM’s Factory Zero in Hamtramck, Michigan. These headlines tell of a 1000 people being laid off while the company adds “cobots.” This is a very concerning situation, but the layoffs at Factory Zero are largely due to customer demands, as EV sales are slowing.

VEBA (Voluntary Employee Beneficiary Association)
In the 2007 Bargaining Agreements with GM, Ford and Chrysler, the VEBA (Voluntary Employee Beneficiary Association) was negotiated. Under the agreement, responsibility for retiree health care was transferred to the trust. This VEBA Trust is known as the UAW Retirees Medical Benefits Trust (UAW-RMBT).

Looking to 2028
In 2023, our top bargaining team was able to secure great gains toward closing the wage gap of our members. Bargaining is a continuing process, so looking toward 2028, one of our top priorities has to be retirement security for our members.
After a lifetime of service, our members deserve a retirement that includes financial security and access to affordable health care.

This year the International UAW will be holding elections for the International Executive Board positions of President, Secretary Treasurer, Vice Presidents and Regional Directors. Candidates will be nominated at the 39th Constitution Convention June 15-19, 2026 in Detroit.
